This book examines local leadership and policy changes as a result of globalisation. The author identifies what behaviours are facilitating the connection of local economies to the global economy and what local structures enable or inhibit the activity. It presents positive indicators from empirical research and three local case studies, that a dyadic arrangement of transformational leadership and a legislative-activist structure are more likely to connect a local economy to opportunities in the global economy. Further, the research presents a new measure for behaviour and structure to deduce the potential for local participation in a global economy. The book is based in and expands several fields of study, and will appeal to scholars of international relations, economics, public management, immigration and politics.

Provides a conceptual framework to understand how the global economy impacts the behaviour of local elected officials and ethnic entrepreneurs Argues that a politically motivated elected official advances a local connection to the global stage more than one motivated by a purely public servant agenda Demonstrates that representation embodied by a political party and global ideals connects the local to the global with greater frequency than a correlation to a local or national representational focus
“Amy Hochadel has provided a practical set of policy recommendations for transformative, local city officials seeking to create entrepreneurial and sustainable global cities.” (Keith Clarke, CBE, Chairman, Future Cities Catapult)
“Local Leadership in a Global Era presents a unique look at the intersection of behaviour and policy in local government acting on the global stage. This book is a significant contribution to the body of literature in International Political Economy.” (Leila Simona Talani, King's College London, UK)

“Cities and local governments around the world are currently undergoing an exciting, dynamic and complex set of changes. In this important work Amy Hochadel provides a unique perspective to our understanding of 'how' and 'why' local elected officials are playing an increasingly influential role in the global marketplace.” (Alan W. Cafruny, Hamilton College, USA)
