Heute verdient er sein Geld als Hörbuchbearbeiter und Regisseur, als Texter für verschiedene Comedians und Schauspieler, als Kinder- und Jugendbuchbuchautor und betreibt mit seiner Frau ein Café in Berlin.

Es war ein Tag für die Tonne.
Graue Wolkenwände verbarrikadierten die Hoffnung auf irgendwas. Allerdings wäre durch die verschmierten Fenster des Kinderheims mit dem Namen »Zur guten Hoffnung« sowieso nichts zu sehen gewesen. Ein Schwall Trostlosigkeit ergoss sich über das Gebäude. Dem negativen Gesamteindruck war das sehr zuträglich.
Es war ein Tag, wie ihn sich nur vollkommen herzlose Buchautoren ausdenken. Ein Tag, den man vergessen könnte, weil er sich einreihte in eine immerwährende Abfolge von genau gleichen Tagen, die diesem nicht nur ein bisschen ähnelten, sondern so gleich und grau und trostlos waren, dass es eine Frechheit ist, ausgerechnet ihn solcherart in den Vordergrund zu stellen.
Es war ein Tag für die Tonne. Aber heute war alles anders. Heute begann eine neue Zeitrechnung. Zumindest im Kinderheim »Zur guten Hoffnung«.
Ein Junge betrat die unterste der Stufen zur Eingangstür des Kinderheims, als hätte er nach langem Aufstieg den allerletzten Gipfelschritt vollbracht. Das hatte er auch tatsächlich, denn das Haus stand auf dem Gigantokatepetel, dem größten Berg einer ganzen Kette aus Bergen, inmitten des unscheinbaren Örtchens Klein-Kalabrien.
Dieser Ort war so nichtssagend und erbärmlich, dass ein reisender Alleinunterhalter ihn bei einem (ebenfalls sehr nichtssagenden und erbärmlichen) Gastspiel einst »Das Kaff der guten Hoffnung« genannt hatte. Der Witz war in der Stille seines schweigenden Publikums zerbröselt und der Alleinunterhalter nie wieder hierhergekommen. Der Name aber war geblieben und klebte an Klein-Kalabrien wie ein furchtbar peinlicher Spitzname, den man eigentlich für immer geheim halten wollte und den jetzt doch die ganze Klasse kennt.
Der Junge schaute ins Tal. Unter ihm lag das Kaff der guten Hoffnung, vor ihm seine Zukunft.
Er stemmte die Arme in die Hüften.
Ein schicksalhaftes Musikstück wäre angemessen gewesen, stattdessen tröpfelte aus der löchrigen Regenrinne mumpfig-öliges Wasser auf den angegammelten Fußabtreter vor der Haustür. Und zwar tröpfelte es mit einem traurigen Plöpp, plöpp, plöpp …
Das Gebäude vor dem Jungen sah aus wie gemalt. Gemalt von einem betrunkenen und hoffnungslosen Künstler ohne jedes Talent und mit dem Hang zu jener Art von Humor, wie sie dem Erzähler dieses Buches eigen ist.
Ein krummes Türmchen, mahnend wie ein Zeigefinger in den Himmel gestreckt; die Fassade bröckelig und verkrustet, lieblos in die kahle Berglandschaft gesetzt, duckte sich dieses dreigeschossige Etwas unter einem schmierpopelgrünen Dach, als wartete es auf seinen baldigen, endgültigen Verfall. Und dieser schien so nah, dass der Junge sich kaum traute näher zu treten.
Ächzend taten die morschen Bretter der kleinen Terrasse ihre Lebensunlust kund, als er sie dann doch betrat – eine Tür vor Augen, die sich ihm wie die rissige, verhornhautete Fußsohle eines sehr alten Mannes darbot.
Etwas wie Unruhe rumorte im Inneren des Jungen, aber nichts, was er nicht hätte herunterschlucken können. Es war nur ein Gefühl. An sich nichts Außergewöhnliches, aber hier mischte sich Erwartung unter, sogar ein kleines bisschen Hoffnung. Und das war bisher so ganz und gar nicht seins gewesen.
Erwartungen hatte er nämlich eigentlich nie gehabt, der Junge ohne Namen, nur einen Plan und den vermutlich stärksten Willen, der je in einem Jungen seines Alters gelebt hat.
Da Zweifel in seinem Kopf nicht existierten, tat er einen weiteren Schritt auf den ächzenden Brettern und ließ damit etwas hinter sich, was er ganz bestimmt nicht vermissen würde.
Dieser Junge war nicht der Einzige, der an diesem vollkommen normalen, aber komplett anderen Tag für die Tonne erstmals seinen Fuß auf Klein-Kalabriens Boden setzte. Ein Mann stocherte mit spitzem und auf Hochglanz poliertem Schuh aus einem schwarzen Protzauto heraus und tastete auf dem Kopfsteinpflaster des Marktplatzes herum. Als sein Schuh Halt gefunden hatte, zog er einen feinstseidig umhüllten schlaksigen Körper hinterher, auf dessen Hals ein kantiger Schädel saß und bedrohlich wackelte. Ein schwarzer Umhang flatterte an ihm herab, wie die ausgefransten Schwingen eines gichtigen Raben.
»Dieter!«, rief der Mann.
»Ja, Sir?« Ein ältlicher Diener mit steifem Stehkragen und dicken wulstigen Ohren stieg aus der Fahrertür, suchte ein bisschen Orientierung und fand schließlich seinen Herrn. »Ja, Sir?«, wiederholte er und salutierte unbeholfen.
»Nicht Sie, Dieter! Der Hund!«
»Rund?«, fragte der Butler.
Da sprang ein Teckel mit blonden Strähnchen aus dem Auto und verbiss sich knurrend im Hosenbein des Dieners.
»Dieter, lass das!«, sagte der feine Herr eher genervt als erschrocken und verdrehte die Augen, wie er es immer tat, wenn er gelangweilt war.
»Ich mach doch gar nichts!«, rief der alte Diener und versuchte den blondierten Teckel abzuschütteln.
Wieder verdrehte der feine Herr die Augen. »Nicht Sie, Dieter! Der Hund!«
Dann warf er, während die beiden Dieters hinter ihm sich ineinander verbissen hatten (beziehungsweise voneinander zu lösen versuchten), einen leidenschaftlichen Blick auf sein Eigentum, das auf diesem vermaledeiten Berg stand. Gigantokatepetel – was für ein schwachsinniger Name!
Überhaupt, alles war schwachsinnig hier. Alles! – Aber das würde sich ändern. Ganz sicher.
Und er kicherte ein echtes Böse-Männer-Kichern, das sogleich von einem Niesanfall unterbrochen wurde. Denn er war allergisch auf Lachen in jeder Form. Auch auf sein eigenes.
Weder vom Niesen noch vom Lachen hörte man etwas oben auf dem Gigantokatepetel. Vielleicht auch deshalb, weil gerade in diesem Moment der altmodische Klingelzug des Kinderheims von einem nicht mehr ganz so fremden Jungen betätigt wurde und mit einem imposanten Gong gongte, statt einfach nur zu klingeln, wie es seine Aufgabe gewesen wäre. H. G. Galgenstrick – Heimleiterin und Schauspielerin stand auf einem Messingblech, das traurig versuchte durch den Grünspan hindurchzuschimmern, so dass der Junge ohne Namen beinahe Mitleid bekommen hätte.
Er polkte und wischte an dem Grünspan herum und konnte weitere Buchstaben darunter entziffern: ZUR GUTEN HOFFNUNG, Heim für schnell vermittelbare Kinder.
Hier war er richtig. Der Junge zog ein zweites Mal an der ausgefransten Strippe des Klingelzuges. Wieder gongte es. Und wieder geschah nichts. Und dieses Nichts dauerte so lange, dass der Junge gerade überlegte, ob er noch ein drittes Mal ziehen sollte, da klackerte es endlich hinter der Tür und die Blende des untertassengroßen Spions wurde von innen beiseitegeschoben. Ein Auge erschien. Es guckte. Der Junge grinste. Das Auge guckte weiter. Und guckte. Und guckte. Dann guckte es noch mal und blinzelte.
Der Junge hörte auf zu grinsen und wusste nun wirklich nicht mehr so recht weiter.
Da glitt die Blende von innen wieder vor und vollständige Stille trat ein. Zwei Minuten, die sich wie Hosenträger um den fetten Wanst der Zeit spannten. Der Junge auf der kleinen Terrasse vor der Tür trat von einem Fuß auf den anderen. Eine dumme Angewohnheit, wenn ihr mich fragt, sich selbst zu treten, nur weil man warten muss.
Dann öffnete sich die Tür vollkommen unvermittelt und mit einer gewissen Heftigkeit, und es klang, als würde ein altersschwacher Doppeldecker über alles hinwegknattern. Das lag an dem tatsächlich über alles hinwegknatternden Doppeldecker, der hoch am Himmel von all dem unter ihm gar nichts mitbekam. Jedenfalls ging in seinem knatterigen Geräuschpegel die Frage unter, die die unglaublich untersympathische Frau mit den streichholzdünnen Lippen und der versteinerten Miene im Türrahmen gerade dem Jungen gestellt hatte …
Sie wiederholte die Frage nicht. Auch nicht, als der Junge verständnislos mit den Schultern zuckte, in den Himmel zum bereits verschwundenen Doppeldecker deutete und zur Bekräftigung die Augenbrauen hob. Sie blieb stumm, auch als er sie fragte, was sie gefragt hatte, sehr höflich, wie er fand.
Der Junge vermutete, dass es sich um Frau H. G. Galgenstrick, die Heimleiterin und Schauspielerin, handelte, und er vermutete richtig. Doch es war eine Eigenart von Frau Helene-Griselde Galgenstrick (so ihr voller Name), dass sie niemals etwas zweimal fragte. Schon gar nicht Kinder. Die sollten nämlich lernen, Erwachsenen genau zuzuhören, erklärte sie jedem, der es wissen wollte. Oder auch nicht.
Sie bat den Jungen herein, zumindest glaubte der das einer verschwommenen Geste ihrer Hand entnehmen zu können. Er folgte ihr in einen gefliesten quadratischen Flur, der gut und gerne ein riesiges Badezimmer hätte sein können – mit einer Deckenhöhe von locker zwanzig Metern. Jeder Schritt hallte zehnfach wider, besonders die Schritte von Frau H. G. Galgenstrick, denn sie trug schwere, klobige Latschen mit Nagelbeschlag und trat damit auf, als gelte es, die Unterirdischen aus ihrem Tiefschlaf zu wecken.
Die untersympathische Frau Galgenstrick klackerte und stampfte vorneweg, ohne den Jungen eines Blickes zu würdigen, und er sah sich um. Links von ihm standen Schuhe in allen Größen und Erhaltungszuständen aufgereiht, und ungefähr hundert verschiedene, teilweise wie krumme Finger gespenstisch aus der Wand ragende Haken hielten Mäntel, Jacken und traurig verschlissene Schals.
In der Mitte des gekachelten Vorraums schraubte sich eine steinerne Treppe mit knöchern-bleichem Geländer in wirren Windungen ins Obergeschoss, und direkt vor dem Jungen tat sich eine große, abgegriffene Doppeltür auf.
Über der Tür hing ein verblichenes Schild, auf dem in alter Schrift zu lesen stand:
Willst du hier willkommen sein,
halte meine Regeln ein!
H. G. Galgenstrick
Noch bevor der Junge zu Ende gelesen hatte und der »Willkommensspruch« seine Wirkung entfalten konnte, war Frau Galgenstrick hinter einem wuchtigen, etwas höher gelegenen Tresen verschwunden, der die Hälfte des kleinen Raums hinter der Doppeltür einnahm.
Dieser Raum war bis unter die Decke holzgetäfelt und wirkte nach der riesigen Eingangshalle bedrückend.
Geweihe und Schädel aller nur erdenklichen Geschöpfe schauten dem Ankömmling staubig und traurig aus stumpfen Glasaugen entgegen. Angeleuchtet wurden sie von muscheligem Rotlicht, und perlenkettendicke Spinnweben umschwebten sie.
Der Tresen vor dem Jungen war höher als er selbst, und er musste erst ein kleines Treppchen ersteigen, um geradeso auf eine geschlossene Glasscheibe schauen zu können. Dahinter saß die grimmige Frau Galgenstrick und sah auf ihn herunter, durch ihn hindurch, über ihn hinweg – alles auf einmal. Sie wirkte abwesend und hätte es vermutlich selber »konzentriert« genannt.
Als sie keine Anstalten machte, die Scheibe zu öffnen, entdeckte der Junge eine Pförtnerklingel auf Augenhöhe und drückte sie pflichtschuldigst. Es funktionierte! Frau Galgenstrick erwachte aus ihrer Starre, und die Scheibe wurde zur Seite gerungst.
Ja, man muss rungsen sagen, denn die Scheibe schepperte mit einem solchen Rungs gegen den Holzrahmen, der sie hielt, dass es sich nur um unzerstörbares Spezialglas handeln konnte. Und nur Spezialglas wird – allgemein bekannt – gerungst, normales Glas erfährt zärtlichere Behandlung. Selbst in einem Kinderheim.
»Ja, bitte?« Die Stimme der Frau war schneidend, und es lag eine derart übertriebene Theatralik in den zwei harmlosen Worten, dass der Junge sich ein Grinsen nicht verkneifen konnte.
»Ähm …«, sagte er und täuschte einen Hustenanfall vor, um seine Erheiterung zu verbergen. Es gelang ihm nicht sonderlich gut. Frau Galgenstrick hinter ihrem Tresen allerdings schien seine Respektlosigkeit nicht im Geringsten zu interessieren. Oder bekam sie diese gar nicht mit?
Es war schwer, sich ein Urteil zu bilden, denn Frau Galgenstrick spielte offenbar eine Rolle und war dabei eine so lausige Schauspielerin, dass selbst einfachste Handlungen unecht, um nicht zu sagen albern wirkten.
»Name?«, fragte sie und betonte und zog das »a« in »Name« so sehr, dass das »e« am Ende beinahe vom Wort herunterrutschte. Sie hielt mit übertriebener Geste einen Bleistift in die Höhe und drehte ein paar schwungvolle Kreise damit in der Luft. Dabei hielt sie die Augen geschlossen, offenbar gefangen von ihrer eigenen Dramatik. Schauspielerin!, schoss es dem Jungen durch den Kopf.
»Name?« Frau Galgenstrick war ganz in ihrer Rolle und ließ sich von dem Neuen, dem Störenfried, dem Eindringling, nicht davon abbringen, sie durchzuziehen. In ihrem Eifer vergaß sie sogar ihre eigene Regel, dass sie niemals eine Frage wiederholte. Diesmal schleuderte sie das »e« am Ende von »Name« beinahe wie ein Geschoss heraus, und der Junge zog sicherheitshalber den Kopf ein, um nicht getroffen zu werden.
»Ohne Namen«, sagte er dann wahrheitsgemäß, denn bisher war er immer nur eine Nummer, ein Buchstabe oder einfach nur »der Ausbrecher-König« gewesen. Einen richtigen Namen hatte er nie besessen. Jedenfalls nicht, dass er wüsste.
Frau Galgenstrick beeindruckte dieser Mangel an Wertschätzung seiner Person nicht im Geringsten. Sie schoss mit dem Bleistift auf ein Blatt Papier vor sich, das offenbar eine Art Anmeldeformular war, und wiederholte dabei jeden einzelnen Buchstaben scharf und kantig. Es tat beinahe weh beim Hören.
»O, h, n, e, n, a, m, e, n!«, verlautbarte sie mit verklärtem Gesicht und misshandelte das Blatt Papier mit dem Stift, als würde sie einen Stein behauen. Dann sah sie auf, öffnete ein Auge, fixierte den Jungen und fragte: »Und vorne?«
Der Junge zweifelte niemals. Er war mit einem klaren Plan hierhergekommen, hatte schon Dutzende Heime von innen gesehen und jede nur erdenkliche Art von Wahnsinn in menschlicher Form erlebt. Und doch zögerte er kurz. Nur ganz kurz allerdings. Dann antwortete er, einer vagen Erinnerung folgend: »Kalle!«
Die Frau nickte zackig, es hätte auch ein Picken sein können, dann kratzte der Stift unter ihrer schneidenden Wiederholung der fünf Buchstaben eine Melodie, die der Junge wohl niemals vergessen würde. »K, a, l, l, e!«
So, Kalle also, dachte der Junge jetzt mit Namen und tastete nach dem auf Brusthöhe in seiner Jacke eingenähten Gegenstand. Er war noch da.
Dann ertönte eine schrille Klingel.
Doktor Balduin Sesselfurz, Bürgermeister von Klein-Kalabrien und zweiter Vorsitzender des ortsansässigen Wandervereins »Müllers Lust«, saß fußnagelschneidend in seinem Schreibtischsessel, als Fräulein Brenner, seine Sekretärin, völlig außer Atem ins Zimmer gestürzt kam.
Fräulein Brenner war seit 24 Jahren im Dienste des ersten Mannes von Klein-Kalabrien (sie hatte bereits fünf Vorgänger von Dr. Sesselfurz kommen und gehen sehen) und verfügte über drei herausragende Eigenschaften:
Erstens besaß sie ein bewunderungswürdiges Verständnis für die Sorgen und Nöte aufgebrachter Bürger. Zweitens war sie jederzeit in der Lage und willens, selbige Sorgen und Nöte vom aktuell in Amt und Würden befindlichen Bürgermeister fernzuhalten.
Und drittens brachte sie so gut wie nichts aus der Ruhe.
