Academic Paper from the year 2024 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 3,12 (B), , course: Political Science, language: English, abstract: This thesis examined the conflict between government policies and citizen practices concerning illegal mining in Obuasi, Ghana. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this research investigated the socio-economic and environmental impacts of illegal mining and aimed to provide recommendations for policy and practice. Findings indicated significant socio-economic benefits for local communities despite adverse environmental consequences, including heavy metal pollution, deforestation, and habitat destruction. The research identified corruption and lack of effective regulation as key drivers of illegal mining, and suggested the need for more inclusive and sustainable policy frameworks that balanced economic development with environmental protection and social justice. The study recommended stringent regulations, alternative livelihood programs, and transparency and accountability in the mining sector to address the scourge of illegal mining and promote sustainabledevelopment in the region.
